The gateway to South East Asia, Bangkok is one of the most vibrant and fun cities in the region. The capital of Thailand has many charms and attractions for all types of people. Though in the past, Bangkok has often derided as a stop gap for backpackers and those tourists travelling through to the beaches, it has emerged as a tourist destination in its own right. In recent years, the country has shown rapid economic development, and it output now equals that of Singapore. A typical Bangkok flight has been affected by this economic growth, and have become lower in price, and cheap last minute deals are now commonplace.

The first thing that hits you when you disembark the plane following your Bangkok flight is the heat. After a long haul flight with stuffy air conditioning, wherever you have come from, the South East Asian climate is something of a shock. Once off the plane, your Bangkok experience starts with the long journey into town. How you have chosen your holiday will affect the rest of your experience of the city. It is possible and perhaps the most common way of visiting Bangkok (and the whole of Thailand for that matter), to travel on a shoestring. Bangkok can be extremely cheap. It is also possible to travel in extreme luxury at a fraction of the cost of cities in the Western Hemisphere.

Should you be travelling on a low budget, your first stop will be the Khao San Road. This short strip of road in the Phra Nakhon region of Bangkok is humming with people 24 hours a day, predominantly backpackers, and people serving the backpackers many needs (of which DVDs and alcoholic beverages are the mainstay). Khao San Road, typically will be a stop off point for people’s trips to the rest of Thailand, and whilst worth a visit to experience its chaotic atmosphere and many bars, Bangkok offers far more interesting attractions. Should you choose to spend a bit more, Sukhumvit houses a number of expensive western hotel resorts, but look a little deeper, and you will find smaller hotels at a fraction of the cost, which are far better value.

Situated a short walk from the Khao San Road is one of the cities major attractions, the Grand Palace. The home in their day of the Thai royalty, this is a must see, containing the temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo). Throughout Bangkok there exist numerous temples, or ‘Wats’, which are definite tourist attractions. A particular highlight is the temple of the reclining Buddha (Wat Po). This temple contains a 46 foot long statue of the Buddha (reclining) covered in gold leaf. If you are more interested in the local cuisine, throughout Bangkok, there are cookery courses available to take for a small fee where you can learn the secrets of real Thai food. Take a trip to Bankgkok’s floating market (Damnoen Saduak). As seen in James Bond, a short trip from the center, and held in one of the citys many Klongs (canals), this is now a part of many tourists itinerarys.

A holiday to Bangkok offers a great deal for those in need of a city break further afield than Europe. Flights to Bangkok are now easily affordable and expenses in Bangkok are considerably lower than most places in the World.
