See People - Visit The Biggest Cities In The World!

For some people their idea of a holiday is white sandy beaches, sun, blue skys and warm clear waters. But for others the excitement and culture of a big foreign city is an ideal holiday – and they don’t come any bigger than these.

The statistics in this article are taken from a 2005 Unitied Nations consensus on the estimated size of the metropolitan population of each city in the world. Here, in descending order, are the top five cities to visit if you like to hang around with lots of people…

And if cities really aren’t your thing, may we suggest mauritius holidays might be?

5. Mumbai, India

Population - A mere 18.2 million. Pah!

Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the epicentre of Indian entertainment and finance. The best time to visit Mumbai is any time between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, and during which many of the cities major festivals take place – the two day Banganga music festival, the Elephanta dance and music festival and the Kala Ghoda arts and craft festival.

4. Sao Paulo, Brazil

Population – A very similar 18.3 million.

A culturally diverse city with, somewhat suprisingly, strong Italian roots (more so than Portugese). With such an eclectic mix of influences you can be sure that there’s plenty to do in Sao Paulo, including lots of exciting cuisine. It’s also the gateway to Brazil and it’s many charms.

1. Tokyo, Japan

Population – 35.2 million!

Blowing the other contenders out of the water with a population of an astounding 35.2 million people comes Tokyo, capital of Japan, nearly doubling the size of the other top 5 cities. There’s no doubt that coming to Tokyo as a visitor is a bewildering experience, with Japanese culture being quite unlike anything else on Earth – although the efficient underground network thankfully is signposted in English. It would take weeks to visit all the tourist destinations in Tokyo alone, and that’s not even considering forays into other parts of Japan. For the lover of bright lights, modern architecture, sushi and big cities there is simply nothing like it.
